Introducing Freecycle

[Freecycle Logo]I thought it might be nice to draw your attention to a scheme that is known as Freecycle. It’s something that I discovered a few years ago and I believe that it deserves to be promoted to a wider audience.

The basic idea behind the scheme stems from the fact that far too much waste is being sent to landfill sites each year. This is bad news for the environment, but it also seems like a real shame, since much of what ends up being sent to the tip is actually perfectly usable.

So Freecycle works by creating a network of users within a particular location. Once you’re signed up, you’re free to tell other people in your local area about items that you no longer need.

If someone likes the sound of what you have to offer, they’ll come and collect it from you. By the same token, you’re able to view items that others are thinking about taking to the tip.

No money changes hands and there’s not even a charge for using the Freecycle website. The entire system works beautifully and it’s amazing what some people think to get rid of. I’m still using a lawn mower that I picked up from a Freecycle contact about four years ago. It’s in great working order and was simply too good to go to waste.

You can sign up for Freecycle online and can select a local network. For those not based in the UK, you’ll find that there are schemes operating in a number of other countries, including Australia, Canada, Germany and the United States.

I recommend making use of Freecycle to ensure that you take a greener approach. You may even be able to reduce your spending, by picking up great items for free.
